May 6 - National Fenestration Rating Council

Posted: Updated:

GOOD MORNING DELMARVA - This year marks the 25th anniversary of the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), a non-profit organization that provides third-party energy performance ratings for windows, doors and skylights.

NFRC's independent ratings give consumers and construction professionals essential information that can help them choose the right windows for a project, as well as comply with state building energy codes and qualify for the ENERGY STAR program.

NFRC was formed in 1989 by a consortium of industry stakeholders who shared a vision of establishing a fair, accurate and reliable performance rating and labeling system that would help consumers compare different products on an apples-to-apples basis.

Three years later, the National Energy Policy Act of 1992 officially recognized NFRC by directing the Secretary of Energy to "support a voluntary national window rating program" and that "such rating program shall be developed by the National Fenestration Rating Council" (Title I, Subtitle C, Section 121).

In celebration of 25 years of service, NFRC is inviting the next generation of architects, builders and homeowners to engage with important energy issues through the NFRC 25th Anniversary Student Film Contest.

College students across the U.S. and Canada are encouraged to produce short films that draw attention to the essential role windows play in everyday life. The top three entries will be screened at the NFRC Fall Member Meeting and the filmmakers will receive scholarships to assist them in continuing their studies.

"There's any number of ways participants can run with this," said NFRC CEO Jim Benney. "In a way, we're looking to these students for inspiration through their creativity and imagination. And it's a great way for NFRC to celebrate its 25th anniversary."
