Police Crack Down On Drinking And Driving On Cinco De Mayo

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND - While folks across Delmarva might be getting ready to hit the town for Cinco De Mayo, police are reminding you not to drink and drive.

Maryland state police troopers will be out working a variety of enforcement programs throughout the state, including DUI saturation patrols and checkpoints, but the efforts aren't only for impaired drivers.

"You can also be in just as much trouble if you are caught walking in the roadway.  Pedestrians are only allowed to be in certain parts of the roadway like cross walks, so if you are unfortunately intoxicated and walking around in the roadway, it may be harder for drivers to see you," says TFC Kevin Moore with the Maryland State Police.

And as an aside, Cinco De Mayo isn't Mexican Independence Day as many may think.

It actually commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
