Rates Of Diabetes Skyrocket In Kids And Teens

Posted: Updated:

47 ABC - Diabetes has skyrocketed in kids and teens according to a new study.

Nationwide, the amount of type 1 diabetes climbed 21 percent from 2000 to 2009, and type 2 diabetes, which is associated with obesity, is up more than 30 percent.

Here on Delmarva, rates of juvenile diabetes are higher than in most of the country.

"We have twice the national average, so, it's about 14 percent," says Susan Cottingim, in charge of diabetes education at PRMC, "I know that pediatricians are trying to keep a healthy weight.  There are several programs that they can become involved in."

One of those programs, the kids and teens diabetes support group at PRMC.

The next meeting for the group will be May 13th, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM in the medical center's Educational Center.
