DE To Launch Skin Cancer Awareness Campaign

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - Delaware's Department of Health and Human Services is gearing up to help reduce skin cancer incidents across the state. The agency is set to launch a campaign that reminds beach-goers to be smart about sun exposure.

As part of the campaign, signs will be posted on lifeguard stands with tips on using sun screen and beach umbrellas, as well as covering up when possible.

This comes after recent data released shows Delaware is now ranked fourth in the nation for melanoma incident rates - a move up from the fifth spot.

But, according to Lisa Henry of the Delaware Division of Public Health, other numbers are going down.

"For mortality, we actually have dropped," said Henry, Chief of the department's Chronic Disease Bureau.  "So while we might be seeing more cases, as many people are not dying of melanoma."

Henry says the decrease in numbers could be attributed to both people and doctors paying attention to moles that look abnormal.

The Department of Health and Human Services has updated www.ProtectYourSkinDE.com, originally launched last year to provide information on protecting your skin. The site will also soon add video testimonials to help raise awareness.
