Salisbury Kidney Walk Raises Money, Hope For Patients

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Tiahna Davis stood surrounded by a sea of bright green shirts Sunday morning at Salisbury's Kidney Walk. Family and friends all sported hand-painted messages in support of her 4-year-old son, Kaiden.

"He's into four wheelers, football, anything boyish," Davis said. "You would never even think he had kidney disease."

Diagnosed at birth with the illness, he's just one of 26 million people nation wide living with chronic kidney disease.

The team in green - "Team Kaiden" - joined the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Walk to raise money for those in the area just like him.

"You may be having trouble with your rent, or paying your electric bill or may need groceries for the week you know we can help with that," said Nicole Scharf of the National Kidney Foundation.

The event was hosted by 47 ABC's Daniel Johnson, and brought out close to 450 people.

Locally, Scharf says fund raisers like the Kidney Walk help the organization work with hospitals, run support groups, and provide emergency assistance to those with kidney disease - a group that includes 1,200 people on dialysis.

According to Scharf, there are nearly 120,000 people nationwide waiting for an organ transplant, and 100,000 are waiting for a kidney. And it's a fate that awaits little Kaiden.

"Now, he has stage two chronic kidney disease, so eventually he will need a transplant," Davis said.

But despite the circumstances, Davis remains upbeat.

"You can still live with kidney disease and live healthy, as long as you take care of yourself," Davis said.

For Kaiden, that means medication and regular doctor's visits - a routine that helps keep things as normal as possible.

"I hope that Kaiden can live a long, healthy life," Davis said.  "He's funny he's smart. You would never even think he had kidney disease."

The local branch of the National Kidney Foundation had a *fifty thousand* dollar fundraising goal for the Kidney Walk, and it was half way there leading up to the event.
