DSU Softball Downs UMES, Claims MEAC North Crown

Posted: Updated:

Princess Anne, Md. – The DSU softball team traveled to UMES Sunday afternoon and completed the sweep over the Hawks with a 8-4 win. The win captures the 2014 MEAC Northern Division crown for the Hornets. With this victory, the Hornets finished the regular season as winners of seven straight, while their 15 conference wins are the most since 2006.

DSU's built a 3-0 lead after Danielle Velez singled to bring in Jordan Stamps during the sixth. The Hawks though, would have an answer as they scored three runs of their own including a two-run Trenece Nash RBI-single up the middle to tie the game.

In the seventh, the Hornets were unable to get anything going, giving the Hawks a chance to win it in the bottom of the frame. There, UMES got runners in scoring position and only one out, but was unable to bring them home.

They'd head to extras, and there Rochelle Sablay belted a two run shot to center to help DSU re-take the lead. DSU later tacked on two more runs by way of infielder Chloe Oro RBI-single and outfielder Jessica Madrid driving pinch runner Samantha Gross with a sac-fly.
