Several Injured After Reportedly Drunk Driver Crashed In Cop Fenwick

Posted: Updated:

FENWICK ISLAND, Del. - Several people were injured, when a suspected drunk driver hit a Fenwick Island Police vehicle, during a traffic stop on Thursday evening.

Delaware State Police say around 9:45 PM, a Fenwick Island Police Officer had pulled over a suspected drunk driver, on SR1, North of Lewes Street. According to the report, as the 33-year-old Officer was sitting in his 2013 Ford Explorer patrol vehicle, a 2010 Nissan Maxima, driven by 42-year-old Heath McDermott, of Bel Air, MD, hit the back of the Explorer.

Police say the impact then caused the Explorer to hit the rear of  the 2005 Toyota Sequoia that it had initially pulled over. The Nissan reportedly continued Northbound, overturning onto its roof, trapping McDermott, and his 48-year-old female passenger.

Both McDermott and his passenger were extricated from the Nissan by officials. McDermott was then flown from the scene to Christiana Medical Center by State Police Helicopter, where he was admitted with non-life threatening injuries. The 48-year-old passenger was transported to Beebe Medical Center, where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A 58-year-old male, and a 60-year-old from the parked Sequoia, were also taken to Beebe Medical Center, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries, and released.

Police say their investigation is on-going at this time, and charges are pending for Heath McDermott for suspected DUI and vehicular assault. Coastal Highway North of Fenwick Island was closed for about an hour and a half while the crash was investigated and cleared.
