Heavy Rain Pounds Pavement In Northern Delaware

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE – Heavy rainfall pounded the pavement in northern Delaware Wednesday night.

Puddles of standing water and countless cracks and potholes turned a once nicely paved road into bumpy, undriveable terrain.

"Here on Port Mahon Road, we've had a lot of damage. The storm waters crested over the berm and much of the road has been washed away," DelDOT Spokesperson Jim Westhoff said.

A section about a mile long on Port Mahon was torn up and in really bad shape. Crews spent all day putting down sand and asphalt to repair the roadway. It's the pathway to a fuel pier utilized by the Dover Air Force Base and a boat ramp many use to access the Delaware Bay.

"This is a vital road for the state, so we rebuild it," Westhoff said.

Moving south to Sussex County, Prime Hook Road is another one of those problem areas.

"We're going to have a lot of potholes here in Delaware, because the water has come underneath the road on the edges and chipped away some of the edge of the road; so drivers should be aware and look for larger potholes on the edges of roadways," Westhoff said.

DelDOT expects it to take a full week, in full force, for crews to fix all the flood damage.

Officials warn there may be some spots still flooded throughout the state. If you come across standing water, turn around -- don't drive through it.
