Inside The Mind Of A Pedophile: The Child's Perspective

47 ABC - Blurring the boundaries between a teacher and a student.

In the case of a 22-year-old Dover teacher accused of having sex with a 13-year-old, Dr. Kathy Seifert calls cases like these beyond disturbing, considering the child is barely pubescent.

"Children, adolescents, even though they may be interested, feel an obligation to do what a teacher tells them to do," she said.

A 37-year-old Smyrna teacher is accused of a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old. Dr. Seifert says in cases where an alleged victim is near adulthood – it's a different kind of problem.

"We have a situation where the teacher actually has power, authority over the student. And so the confusion comes because it's not an equal situation."

That unequal status can create a moral conflict in children. A confusion that Dr. Seifert warns is extremely harmful with many teacher-student relationships.

"Here we have a teacher coming along and saying, do this. And he's intrigued, and he's interested, and he's a child. And his teacher says do this. And he's thinking well it must be okay because my teacher is saying, do this."

Perhaps even more troubling -- abused children growing up to be perpetrators themselves. It's a cycle Dr. Seifert says can be broken with intensive therapy.

She also points out that it's important for the perpetrators to receive treatment too. Even if they go to jail, once they come out in the community, it's likely they'll do it again. So it's essential they go through some kind of therapy or skill building to help change their cognitive distortions.
