Restricted Smoking Areas Could Come To OC In May 2015

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Areas that restrict smoking may be on the way to Ocean City's beaches.

Mayor Rick Meehan says town leaders have proposed an ordinance that would require only certain areas to allow smoking. He says city council voted Tuesday for the ordinance to become effective May 1st, 2015.

However, before that happens, Mayor Meehan says the ordinance will be brought to council on September 15th, and after public comment, they will have a deadline to vote by September 30th.

"It's 2014 and we recognize smoking is a health hazard, we also recognize the environmental concerns and problems that smoking and the filters from cigarettes cause on our beaches," says Mayor Meehan. "We're going to discuss how to implement a plan that would respect the rights of all of our beach goers, and allow those that wish to smoke to do so in designated areas."

Mayor Meehan says by giving themselves more than a year, they can develop a plan and make sure all residents and property owners are aware of the ordinance it becomes official.
