Inside The Mind Of A Pedophile

Posted: Updated:

47 ABC - Within one week we've learned of two teachers in Delaware, each accused of having sexual relations with one of their students. These accusations prompted 47 ABC to look into the broader issue of teacher-student relationships.

On Friday, we learned that 37-year-old Jennifer Suarez allegedly had a sexual encounter with at 17-year-old Smyrna student. Three days later in Dover, 22 year-old Stephanie Seabury was accused of a having sex with a 13-year-old student.

We sat down with psychologist Doctor Kathy Seifert to dig deeper into the ongoing issue of inappropriate relationships with minors, going inside the mind of a pedophile.

"People who have sex children have – we call them cognitive distortions. But they have mixed up ideas about what's right and wrong. So they have the idea that what they're doing is okay," she said.

The root of that issue likely comes from a traumatic event. Dr. Seifert points to child abuse and neglect.

"She had to have had either trauma history, mental health problems, substance abuse problems, or some combination of skill deficits. Sexual assault is more often about power than it is about sex," she said.

Boundary issues, a lack of interpersonal skills, immaturity and the inability to create adult friendships and relationships will lead the perpetrators to target children, giving them power and control.

"The other piece of it is she was paying attention to her own needs, instead of paying attention to the needs of the child. This is very narcissistic," Dr. Seifert said.

She warns that combined with a position of authority, can lead to the unthinkable.

Wednesday, we'll take a look into the mind of the victim. Dr. Seifert walks us through the thought process of a child who is put in this type of situation. She also discusses the healing process for the victim and the need to counsel perpetrators.
