Preventing Kidney Disease While Living With Diabetes

Posted: Updated:

DELMARVA - Kidney disease is a very real threat to those who have diabetes, and some parts of DelMarVa are at a higher risk. Somerset County sees a high rate of diabetes, due to a high obesity rate. Nurse practitioner Regina Kundell suggests limiting over-the-counter pain and fever pills, which are tough on kidneys. She says it is vital to regularly monitor blood sugar and blood pressure levels. But your best bet to preventing kidney disease, is just living a healthy lifestyle.

Regina says, "smoking and obesity also contribute to kidney disease, so anything that can really keep you healthy in general will not only protect your kidneys but protect your heart and all the other organs that are affected by diabetes."

The 2014 Salisbury Kidney walk will be at Winterplace Park on Sunday May 4th. Sign-ups start at 9 am and the walk itself starts at 10.
