MD Union Workers Push For "Safe Jobs To Save Lives"

Posted: Updated:

DELMAR, Md. - From state highway workers and hospital employees to corrections officers, there are a lot of dangerous jobs out there.

Union workers observed Worker's Memorial Day on Monday remembering those who were either killed on the job or assaulted by patients. Correctional officer Chris Duffy tells 47 ABC that in Western Maryland, there were at least 15 incidents of workers assaulted by inmates just in one month.

Duffy and other workers are advocating for safety conditions.

"We actually had an officer that was stabbed up 10 times," said Duffy. "It's all about public safety, that's our job. That's why we took it and you know, but it's also about personal safety and coming home to our families."

"Any loss of life or any injury is way too great, so prevention is really the key," said Laura Butler, a social worker for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Maryland lawmakers passed the Safe Care Act this session, which essentially looks to help prevent assaults from patients to hospital workers. Gov. Martin O'Malley is expected to sign that bill next month.
