Large Tornado Hits Tupelo, MS


A very large and violent tornado has just (4/28 at 3:30PM EST) hit the birthplace of Elvis Presley, Tupelo, MS.  Attached is a radar image with a hook visible and a tornado icon just SW of Tupelo.  According to Chief Meteorologist Marc Weinberg at WDRB in Louisville, KY, the tornado was reported to have a ball of debris 1 mile wide.  The tornado was also reported to have rotating winds upwards to 161 mph and was moving to the NE at 50 mph.  There are numerous damage reports in Tupelo, and more are sure to come out in the next few hours as clean up begins.   Along US 78 and US 45 several tractor-trailers have also been reported to have been blow off the road.  This storm is still dangerous (for the Midwest), producing heavy rain, hail, high winds, and tornadoes.
