Angry Parents Speak Out After Learning Of Daycare Worker Accused Of Abuse

SALISBURY, Md. - Parents are up in arms after learning a former daycare worker allegedly assaulted a three-year-old child at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church in Salisbury. Some are questioning how the church handled the situation. Others are demanding that they see the video that recorded the alleged assault.

"I don't believe that was the only time she did it. That was just the only time she was stupid enough to get caught," a concerned parent said.

"We can't trust other people with our children," another parent said.

The toddler reportedly suffered from bruises, scratches and a wrist sprain – all of it caught on camera.

Forty-seven-year-old Fay Bartley now faces charges of second degree assault, reckless endangerment and contributing to the condition of a child.

"I did see Fay lose her temper a couple of times," said one parent.

Another parent confronted the director of the development center and pulled her daughter from the daycare Friday morning after 47 ABC first broke the story Thursday.

"They didn't handle it well. We found out from the story that WMDT released yesterday," she said.

The boy was reportedly grabbed, yanked and pulled by the arm. The police report says he was dropped on the floor and straddled by Bartley on April 3rd. The next day, the director of the daycare notified police and an investigation began. Bartley was summoned and charged three weeks later.

Some parents are furious that they were never made aware of the incident.

"We need to have been informed. I know specifics couldn't have been discussed, but at least that something had happened so that we could make the decision as to whether or not our children were safe. And they made that decision for us,"

Emmanuel Child Development Center responded to 47 ABC's inquiry about the incident with this statement:

"Our mission at Emmanuel Child Development Center is to provide a nurturing and caring Christian environment where children can learn and develop. We offer early care and Christian education to infants, toddlers and preschoolers. We respect the privacy rights of all our parents and students. Our concern is for all involved. Concerning the recent incident, it would not be appropriate for the center to comment since the matter is currently in litigation."

A trial date has been set for June 23rd. If Bartley is convicted on all counts, she's looking up to 18 years behind bars. 47 ABC attempted to reach out to Bartley a number of times for comment, but she was unavailable.
