Reports Of Sexual Assault Up, Not Necessarily A Bad Sign

Posted: Updated:

47 ABC - April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, aimed to teach people about sexual violence and educate them on how to prevent sexual violence.

A counselor from Salisbury University says they've seen a rise in the number of sexual assaults reported, but that doesn't necessarily mean more attacks are happening.

"Once they understand that can be all criteria for sexual violence...sexual assault...then that begins to click more in their minds and when they know that there's additional resources are available to them," says Tasha Thomas, a counselor at Salisbury University, "that's more for them to consider and understand perhaps what they've been experiencing is sexual violence...and then we hear more about that."

Sexual violence victims aren't exclusively female, about 10 percent of all assaults are men.
