Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds fell in the rubber match to the Savannah Sand Gnats Wednesday night 3-2. The loss also means the Shorebirds fell in the three game series, 2 games to 1.
Delmarva was the first on the board in the bottom of the first, but the Sand Gnats came right back to tie the game and then take the lead in the second. The Shorebirds would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Lorenzo singled again, and then picked up his second stole base of the game. The smart base running allowed for a Jeff Kemp line drive double to bring him home.
The teams would be tied til the 7th inning, in which the Sand Gnats were able to score the go-ahead run. The Shorebirds had one final chance in the 9th with two on and two out, but a deep fly out to center would seal the deal.
The Shorebirds now host the Charleston RiverDogs for a four-game series starting on Thursday. Left-hander Mitch Horacek (0-1, 2.89) starts in the series opener against Charleston southpaw Caleb Smith (1-1, 1.26). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Perdue Stadium.
