BOWERS BEACH, Del. - A one million dollar grant is helping bring nearly 750 acres of land near Bowers Beach to DNREC.

According to DNREC, acquiring the Vance Morris Tract will protect 315 acres of wetlands, 388 acres of farmland and 38 acres of upland forest. The tract connects more than 4,000 acres of protected public and private lands around the St. Jones River.

DNREC secretary Collin O'Mara says the land will help protect and conserve coastal wetlands and wildlife habitat as well as expand public access and wildlife-associated recreational opportunities within the Bayshore region.

Outdoor enthusiasts will be able to fish and kayak in the area.

"This site, we hope to have open maybe by the end of the year after we do a bunch of work to make sure it's ready for the public," said O'Mara.
