Delmarva Power Donates 19,000 Light Bulbs To MD Food Bank

MARYLAND - Nearly 4,800 families on Maryland's Eastern Shore will soon be saving on their energy bills.

Tuesday morning, Delmarva Power donated 19,000 energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs to the Maryland Food Bank. According to the USDA, more than 720,000 Marylanders are uncertain about where their next meal is coming from. Many are often forced to choose between paying for food, rent, medicine or utilities.

"The food bank has actually transitioned over the past several years, getting donations that are going to help more with household needs to try and free up expenses that are otherwise needed for food. It will avail them of resources that they wouldn't otherwise have, and hopefully by providing a household item, they're going to be able to put more food on their table," managing director at the Maryland Food Bank Jennifer Small said.

The light bulb giveaway supports Governor Martin O'Malley's EmPOWER Maryland initiative to help the state reduce energy consumption by 15 percent by 2015.
