Walk 6,000 Miles: Bill In Works To Recognize First Coast-To-Coast Trail

Posted: Updated:
CAPE HENLOPEN, Del. - A sunny day brings dozens of walkers to Cape Henlopen State Park.

Just like Julia Marr, who hits the trails at least three times a week.

"It's peaceful, beautiful. I love the beach, that's why I moved down here," said Marr.

From the beach up through the trails leads to a little known 6,800 mile hike out to California. It's called the American Discovery Trail, the only one that spans coast-to-coast.

But there's a problem.

Along many pathways in the park, small signs with the ADT symbol are pinned to posts, but they're barely visible. Now, the society is pushing to make the signs stand out. Peter Schoettle, a volunteer for ADT in Maryland, says the group can't put markers out in many locations since the trail is not nationally recognized by the National Park Service.

"It's easy to get lost," said Schoettle.

Sen. Chris Coons (D) is set to sponsor a bill to change that.

"We've got lots of north-south trails, the Appalachian Trail being the most famous among them, but we don't have an east-west trail," said Sen. Coons.

Schoettle, among others, are already hopeful about Delaware's piece of the trail's legacy.

"Years from now, I expect people to look back and say you know those people that made that American Discovery Trail, that was a neat idea," said Schoettle.

The bill isn't expected to be introduced until next week at the earliest. The trail spans 15 states, hitting along the way the NASA-Goddard Visitors Center and the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis.
