Somerset Co. Wind Energy Center May Be Canceled

Posted: Updated:
SOMERSET CO., MARYLAND - SOMERSET CO., Md. - The Great Bay Wind Energy Center in Somerset County that would have reportedly brought in millions of dollars in revenue will soon be canceled, and Maryland's Comptroller, Peter Franchot, is speaking out about it.

Franchot sent a letter to Governor Martin O'Malley late last week, asking him to veto a House Bill 1168 that's awaiting his signature. It prohibits wind turbines in the state within 56 miles of the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.

"This project is ready to go," Franchot said. "The private sector has put $4 million and four years of work into making it go, and right at the eleventh
hour, it got this moratorium placed on it."

He says $44 million in revenue and and 500 construction jobs are at stake in a county that had an average unemployment rate of 10 percent in 2013.

"The governor right now is the only person who can save it," Franchot said. "He's very supportive, but the question is politically if he's able to veto this and stick up for the people of somerset county."

He adds the new law would hinder the state's attempt to reach renewable energy goals.
