Maryland Spends $90 Million On Health Exchange Technology

Posted: Updated:
MARYLAND - Maryland's troubled health exchange has reportedly racked up $90 million dollars in technology expenses.

According to reports, it is the largest expense of the $130 million investment, despite claims from various officials, including Governor Martin O'Malley, who have said that the website is a small part of the exchange. Experts reportedly say the exchange would be cheaper to replace than fix.

In a statement to 47 ABC, Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, Maryland's health secretary who provided a breakdown of the numbers, says, "With significant manual effort and elbow grease, in the face of major IT challenges, the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange exceeded enrollment projections by more than 20 percent this year. More than 300,000 Marylanders gained access to quality and affordable coverage. We look forward to significant improvements in the website in time for the fall open enrollment season."
