UMES Baseball Defeats DSU In Extras

Posted: Updated:

Dover, DE - University of Maryland Eastern Shore's baseball team traveled to take on conference opponent Delaware State University for a double header Friday afternoon. In the first matchup, both teams would send their aces to the mound in what would prove to be a defensive battle. Knotted at 0-0, the Hornets would be the first on the board in the third inning after they sent an RBI single to deep center. But the Hawks came right back in the top of the fourth after the Hornets had a difficult time getting a single to left back in field, leading to the runner advancing to third. The next batter would send a shot to the short stop, deep enough to bring in the game tying run.

Both pitchers would rebound and continue to pitch strong through the next few innings. Headed into the bottom of the 7th, the teams were still facing a 1-1 tie before the Hornets were able to send a solo shot to deep left. But again the Hawks would have the answer as in the 8th they rallied to bring in the tying run again, this time off an RBI single to right.

Both pitchers would go through the ninth, and the game would go to extras as relief pitchers took the mound. The Hawks would threaten in the 10th, but good defense prohibited them from scoring the walk-off run. Finally in the 11th, the Hawks would break through as they were just able to run out a double play ball at first, allowing the go-ahead run to score. The Hornets could get anything going in the bottom of the frame, as UMES took a thriller, 3-2 in 11 innings.
