DOVER, Del. - Police have arrested a Dover woman in connection with the assault and robbery of an 82-year-old man.

Officials say it happened around 12:45 a.m. Thursday morning on the 700 block of South Halsey Road. The victim says he came home from a Dover restaurant and was confronted by 33-year-old Shirley Smith, of Dover. He was taken from his car and forced into his home.

Family members declined to go on camera, but told 47 ABC they believe Smith and Timothy Safford came through a side door. That's when Cpl. Mark Hoffman says he was tied up to a chair in the back room.

Smith and Safford demanded money and allegedly cut his ear, threatening to cut it off if he did not cooperate.

"He was there for approximately seven hours," Hoffman said. "He was able to free himself. I believe he was able to just work his hands free and untie himself eventually."

He was taken to Kent general hospital with several stab wounds to his torso.  The suspects reportedly took his bank card, cash and car. His vehicle was found at the Capitol Park housing development.

Police say Smith is an acquaintance of the victim, but they're not sure of the extent of their relationship.

Smith is also no stranger to the law. She was arrested exactly a year ago on April 17, 2013, for a domestic dispute.

When Troopers took Smith into custody, she reportedly spit on a resident of the home and a Trooper. Reports show Smith complained that she needed to go to the hospital for a preexisting medical condition, and was taken Kent General Hospital. That's where police say she fled without being treated.

She was found five days later at Dover Downs. After fleeing in this incident, she has been charged with kidnapping, robbery, assault and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, among other charges.

Anyone with information about this incident or on the whereabouts of Safford should contact the Dover Police Department at 302-736-7111 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
