VA Transportation Plan Makes Debut Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia's six-year transportation plan totals $13.1 billion, with $9.9 billion earmarked for highway construction.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board released the plan Wednesday at a meeting in Richmond. It allocates funding for essential highway, bridge, rail and other transportation projects for the next six fiscal years, starting July 1.

The program is updated annually to reflect the latest revenue projections and other priorities.

The updated plan is $1.3 billion less than last year. That reflects decreases in federal highway and transit funding.

Besides highway construction, the plan allocates $3.2 billion for rail and public transportation.

Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne will take it on the road for nine public hearings. The first is scheduled Thursday in Chesapeake. Other hearings are planned in Bristol, Fairfax, Staunton, Richmond, Fredericksburg, Culpeper, Lynchburg and Salem.
