April 25 - Target Case Competition

Posted: Updated:

GOOD MORNING DELMARVA - What should Target invest in that would make customers consider the national retailer first when thinking about food?

That was the question posed to six teams of finance and administration students in Dr. Leonard Arvi's Management Finance class at Salisbury University during this year's Target Case Competition.

Considering advertising, online and mobile grocery sales, and promotional pricing, all six teams had 15 minutes to present their ideas to a panel of judges including Arvi, Mo Brown and Dr. David LeBaron of the Management and Marketing Department in SU's Franklin P. Perdue School of Business.

The top three teams advanced to a final round, presenting before Target executives including Chris Fereday, Josian Colon and SU alumna Afnan Idris. Potential solutions included creating shopping list apps, doubling reward card points for groceries, allowing customers to pick out fresh foods like produce from the store in person after purchasing the product online, and sponsoring an online cooking show.

In the end, however, a simpler approach proved to be the judges' favorite: Improve advertising and emphasize competitive prices.

The winning team, comprised of Tarik Aybartugu of Istanbul, Chris Harr of Salisbury and Sam Hopkins of Cincinnati shared a $4,000 prize.

Other finalists included T'nia Falbo, Brent Galloway, Aaron Loney, Darya Tarasova, Allison Tingle and Maggie Vincent.

"Target has long been a supporter of the Perdue School and our students," said Arvi. "We appreciate their continued sponsorship of this competition and the role Target continues to play in helping to develop the management and marketing leaders of tomorrow."
