UPDATE: 5 Charged After Reportedly Stealing Freon In Ocean Pines

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN PINES, Md. - Five juveniles were arrested over the weekend, after they were allegedly caught stealing gas from cooling units, for huffing.

The Worcester County Sheriff's Office says over the weekend, they charged five juveniles with theft in relation to stealing Freon from an unoccupied home in Ocean Pines. An investigation reportedly showed that the suspects would take the Freon from air conditioning units of homes that they knew were unoccupied for the season, and put it into trash bags for storage.

Police say they pulled the hose from the A/C unit, then the Freon would flow from the unit, into the bag, and once the bag was full, they would tie it off. Officials say huffing is the act of a person inhaling a gas from a bag, to achieve a high, or until they pass out.

"They inhale the freon out of it to get that high," says Lieutenant Edward Schreier with the Worcester County Sheriff's Office. "It can kill you if you do a lot of it, it can give you brain damage because it cuts off the oxygen to your brain."

There have reportedly been several documented cases of death caused by exposure to Freon, so the Sheriff's Office is asking residents to keep an eye on your, and your neighbor's homes for people near the air conditioning units. Anything suspicious should be reported by calling 410-632-1111, or your local Police Department.
