"Panic Button" Smartphone App Hopes To Help Teachers

Posted: Updated:

47 ABC - With mass violence in schools continuing to make headlines, one company claims their app could help keep students and teachers safe.

The SchoolGuard app is a smartphone-based panic button that can alert all law enforcement near a school, who have the Hero 911 app installed on their phones.

To help minimize the chance of accidental activation, app makers say it only works on school property, and there are codes needed for activation.

While it's being touted as a panic button app, developers say it takes that concept a step further.

"I think it opens up communication channels to the rest of the teachers," says Glenn Fueston, "our system gives the capability for a school administrator or principal to be in a command center  to push down messages to all of the teachers in a covert manner."

The app just launched within a school system in Indiana last week, and they're working on getting law enforcement and school systems here on Delmarva to get on board as well.
