SU Football Players Team Up With Chesapeake Housing Mission

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Football players from Salisbury University spent their Saturday in the sun giving back to the community.

In honor of National Athletes Community Service Day, teammates built a wheelchair ramp for a disabled elderly woman in Pocomoke City. They also helped repair rooms at the Christian Shelter, which provides housing for the homeless, and volunteered at the HALO shelter in Salisbury.

The players teamed up with Chesapeake Housing Mission for the day of service, which is a group of volunteers that helps those in poverty with home repairs.

"It's the biggest need these days getting people access in and out of their homes to go to medical appointments," says Don Taylor, executive director of Chesapeake Housing Mission. "The relationships of the people, connecting these people with the lady who lives here is as important at what they're building."

"Being the only football program in town, I think it's our duty to help out in the community," says Coach Sherman Wood, the head coach of Salisbury University's football team. "This is something we routinely like to do."

Taylor says they completed 38 projects in the community last year, and this year, they hope to complete at least 40.
