Brenda Jackson Stirs Up The Competition In New Cooking Show

Posted: Updated:

Marion Station, MD - Sugar and Spice, but not always nice. That was the strategy of Brenda Jackson, who represented the East Coast, while competing for $50,000 on Food Network's newest show America's Best Cook.

Brenda started cooking for her husband and his friends over forty years ago, and cooking became her new hobby. And while other contestants may have doubted her due to her age, she says she really had the edge. "My strategy was to whip those little kids butts because they thought, what does granny know? Well, granny's been cookin' 40 years, and you've only been cooking five!" she said.

Brenda recently started entering as many cooking competitions as she could find. Producers from Food Network got her name from a Pillsbury contest she entered. They gave her a call last September, asking her to audition for the show.  "And I said of course! I'll try anything I love a good adventure," she responded.

She says she was surprised she was picked. But even more surprising? Her newest competitor had beat her at the Pillsbury competition one year ago. She used that to her advantage.

"I knew her, she did not know me. Right before we were about to go on the opening show I said, 'You know I know who you are!' to put a little knife in her. To let her know that, 'I know your secret and now I might tell,'" she said.

And she's good at keeping secrets. When I asked her who won it all, she responded, "You'll just have to tune in to find out."

America's Best Cook premieres this Sunday, April 13th at 9 PM on the food network. Brenda will be here live on Good Morning Delmarva this Monday to help recap the episode and talk more about her experience.
