Zeta Phi Beta Scholarships

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. -  Reunite Johnson is the President of the Iota Chi Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta, a historically black sorority. "Our founding principle of the sorority is service, we're big on service," she says. One part of that service is offering scholarships.

"Education is important, but we also want you to have character that's what we stand for. We want you as person to help other people as well, because that's what we're supposed to do as human beings anyway," says Reunite.

The scholarships started in the early 2000s, and are named after Sarah Hicks Jolley, who was an educator in Dorchester County for forty-six years. This year -- they're offering two, $500 scholarships.

" We represent the entire eastern shore so [candidates] can be from Queen Anne's County all the way to Somerset County. You do have to be a female of African-American heritage, and we are looking for you to have at least a 2.8 grade point average," she says.

Students can find the applications at their school's guidance office.

"If you work in your education field, and you've participated in a club or a sport, you took the time in your community to help, make sure that you do go into the guidance office, and fill out this application," says Reunite.

The deadline is May 6th.
