WICOMICO CO., Md. - Investigators say they continue to field calls for crimes against people with disabilities.
"[A vulnerable adult] has been abused, neglected or has had financial crimes committed against them," said Wicomico County assistant state's attorney Joel Todd.
According to statistics from the Bureau of Justice, people at least 12-years-old living with disabilities were victimized close to a million times in 2011. These crimes were nonfatal violent crimes, which includes robbery, assault, rape and sexual assault.
"You give people an opportunity and some people will take advantage of that opportunity," said Sgt. David Owens of WBI.
