EASTON, Md. - Matthew Mikowski, the 18-year-old on trial for the murder of Samuel Cross, was convicted by a jury late Wednesday night in Talbot County. He was acquitted of a second-degree murder charge, but the jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and 2nd degree assault.

Mikowski strangled 18-year-old Samuel Cross of St.Michaels last June, while hanging out at Mikowski's home.

"I don't think anybody expects that to be happening in their back door. It's really unfortunate. It's very sad," Kathy Hanna of Easton, Md. said.

The boys reportedly used a hallucinogenic drug known as 25C.Witnesses tell police they watched Mikowski choke Cross to death that night. The next day, Cross' body was found next to his SUV on the side of Bozman-Neavitt Road.

"My daughter, I believe, knew who the kids were. It's a shame when you mess with drugs -- things happen. It's kind of sad in a way, but it's nothing that anybody can do. I wish that maybe the kid would have reported it right away," Rosario Dipasquale of Easton, Md. said.

The medical examiner's office found that Cross died as a result of homicidal asphyxia due to strangulation.

Mikowski, who was 17 at the time of the incident was tried as an adult. He could face up to 25 years behind bars. A sentencing date has yet to be set.
