Email Leaked, Sussex GOP Asks Candidate To Reconsider Bid

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX CO., Del. - In the past two years, controversy has surrounded two members of the Sussex County Republican Party.

First Eric Bodenweiser with sex crime allegations. Then Sussex County councilman Vance Phillips, who faces a civil suit for reported sexual misconduct.

Now their own party is asking Phillips to reconsider his candidacy for the District 5 seat. Sussex GOP chair John Rieley recently sent Phillips an email about reconsidering.

Phillips replied with only one word: "nuts."

47 ABC spoke with party affiliate Duke Brooks.

"If you're going to be a politician or be a candidate and are going to be associated with a party, your actions will reflect more broadly than just on yourself," said Brooks.

Sussex County Republicans say they are not looking for another candidate at this time. Phillips is expected to run for re-election, a position he has held for 16 years.
