MD Health Officials To Conduct 'Sleep Study' In Public Schools

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND - Public school students' sleep schedules will be the focus of a new study in Maryland.

Lawmakers reportedly approved legislation on Friday that would require the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to look at how sleep needs in adolescents affect school performance.

Health officials say they will look at a number of health aspects, including changes in sleep and wake cycles to weigh the impact.

"The literature certainly suggests that the sleep wake cycles in adolescents is different than when they're young children or even as adults, so they tend to have trouble falling asleep and getting up" says Dr. Laura Herrera, deputy secretary for public health services at Maryland DHMH. "Other states have looked at this issue and have shown some improvements in performance in school work."

Dr. Herrera says they will present their findings to the Maryland Department of Education, and from there, recommendations could be made to start public schools later than 8:00 AM.
