UPDATE: Federalsburg Discusses Flood Insurance Spike W/ MDE

Posted: Updated:

FEDERALSBURG, Md. - The town of Federalsburg held a town meeting tonight to discuss flood insurance rates.

Town leaders invited a representative from the Department of the Environment to clear up concerns in the town. Last month, 47 ABC reported how flood insurance rates for dozens in Federalsburg could potentially skyrocket.  The small eastern shore town has one of the highest percentages of policies facing rate hikes in Maryland, after Congress reevaluated subsidized homes in flood zones, which, because of how they're built, are more prone to damage.

Mayor Bill Bealls says despite the meeting, many are still confused about what to expect. He says the hope to bring in a FEMA official to answer more questions, but in the mean time, they have agreed to participate in a Community Rating System (CRS). This is reportedly a free program that gives towns better flood insurance rates if they appoint a coordinator. Mayor Bealls says they have appointed Federalsburg's Code Enforcement Officer to take the role, and he will have to undergo a week-long training.
