Overtime Pays Well For Delaware State Troopers

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Moonlighting as a state trooper in Delaware is a pretty good gig, if you can get it.

State payroll figures show that five troopers made more than $433,000 in special duty overtime last year, in addition to their regular pay.

Counting overtime, three of the troopers earned more than the governor, cabinet officials and most judges.

Several of those five troopers have been at the top ranks of overtime pay among all state employees for the past several years, according to state records. Many prison guards and state hospital workers also earn tens of thousands of dollars in overtime each year.

State police note that the vast majority of overtime pay for troopers comes from volunteer special duty assignments for which private third parties, not taxpayers, pick up the tab.
