Punkin Chunkin Out In Bridgeville, DE Leaders Push For New Home

Posted: Updated:

BRIDGEVILLE, Del. - Has Punkin Chunkin seen its last launch in Sussex County?

It's still unclear, but what is known is that it most likely won't be held at the Bridgeville farm it's called home since 2007.

Farm owner Dale Wheatley recently told the Punkin Chunkin Association no more.

In a statement, he tells 47 ABC, "I can't do it with people suing me. It's going to be hard to find (someone to take on) Punkin Chunkin. They need the room."

Wheatley Farms and Punkin Chunkin are being sued by a former volunteer who claims he suffered spinal fractures in 2011.

In November, Sen. Brian Pettyjohn (R-Georgetown) proposed a liability cap to try to limit damages that would have to be paid for any personal injury or wrongful death. The bill was nixed in January.

Now, Pettyjohn says he's reaching out to land owners to keep the tradition going.

"It's a very Sussex County event," said Pettyjohn. "I'd love to see it stay in Sussex County where the event was born and where it grew up."

For Richard Simpson Jr., November may have been the last time he fired off his air cannon "SkyBuster" at the Bridgeville farm.

"I'd like to see it remain in Sussex County, but I don't think we have a place big enough to put on the event in the county," said Simpson Jr. "We have to go where we can shoot, that's all we can do."

47 ABC reached out to the Punkin Chunkin Association to see if they have come to a decision or where they are looking. Our calls went unreturned on Tuesday.

The event is still scheduled for October 24th-26th.
