Mosquito Control Season Spraying Starts In April In DE

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - Officials will be starting mosquito control spraying throughout the state, this week.

DNREC says they will be treating wooded wetlands near populated areas in New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Counties, to try and control the early stages of seasonal mosquitoes to prevent higher numbers in late May and June.

Mosquito Control Administrator Dr. William Meredith says "The colder weather this year has somewhat delayed development of larvae for these species. But it won't much affect the numbers of adult mosquitoes that'll eventually emerge. And given the extent of wet woodland habitats this spring, potential exists for lots of mosquitoes to emerge."

Over the next few weeks spraying will be focused on populated areas, since Delaware has about 100,000 acres of wetlands.

Advanced notice will be given of where and when spraying will be taking place, through daily radio announcements, the Mosquito Control webpage, and the toll free number at 1-800-338-8181.

Residents are also asked to do their part by reducing mosquito producing habitat on their property by cleaning clogged rain gutters, keeping fresh water in bird baths, and emptying standing water from various stray containers outside.

To request local relief, call Mosquito Control's field offices:
· Glasgow Office, 302-836-2555, serving New Castle County and the northern half of Kent County including Dover.
· Milford Office, 302-422-1512, serving the southern half of Kent County south of Dover and all of Sussex County.

For more information about Delaware's Mosquito Control program, call the Dover office at 302-739-9917.
