Lower Shore Appointments Fill Up For Final Day Of Healthcare Enrollment

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - It's the last day to enroll for Health Care under the Affordable Care Act, but even before Monday started, the Lower Shore Health Insurance Assistance Program had zero appointments open.

Program coordinator Katherine Gunby says that didn't stop the phones from ringing. According to Gunby, the organization received 30 calls in the first two hours of business, usually their average for a workday.

"If [residents] wanted health insurance, they sort of finally jumped forward and said, 'we need help enrolling,'" said Gunby.

In Georgetown, marketplace guides manned the computers in the morning. Workers tell 47 ABC there's been a steady increase in Sussex County over the past two weeks.

Chris Casazza says there's a great need in the area due to the number of farming jobs.

"Some of those folks, their main function isn't technology," said Casazza. "They don't get up in the morning and check the news on the laptop."

Although the enrollment technically ends Monday at midnight, the Obama Administration granted a grace period until April 15th if you've started the process.

"We're not able to get them in on an appointment, because we are all booked up," said Gunby. "But we can put them on a list to provide special assistance up for the next couple of weeks in April."

Gunby says navigators at the Lower Shore Health Insurance Assistance Program will be available until 8PM Monday night. After that, we're told anyone intending on signing up will need to call Maryland Health Connection at 800-396-1961.

As for Sussex County, Casazza says they will stay as long as help is needed. The number to call is 302-853-5524.
