VA Advocates Report Rush To Sign Up For Insurance

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia's health care advocates are busy with last minute phone calls and appointments in anticipation of a midnight deadline to obtain health insurance under President Barack Obama's signature health care reform law.

Nonprofit officials said Monday that there's been a surge of interest in recent weeks for face-to-face help signing up for new health insurance.

Monday is the deadline for open enrollment for health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act. Those who haven't signed up, or at least attempted to sign up, and don't already have health insurance could face penalties.

Virginia slightly surpassed its target total enrollment of 101,600 by the end of February. The state is projected to have 127,000 residents sign up by the end of Monday.
