Pocomoke High Class of ’64 Memorial Scholarship

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. -  Pocomoke High School's class of 1964 isn't your typical group. They graduated just 54 students. They were close. They still are. And they've been honoring members who have passed away since 1994, when, at their 30th reunion, they decided to start a Class of 1964 Memorial Scholarship

Sonny Bloxom is part of a nucleus of class members overseeing the scholarship effort. He recalls the night of their reunion, "Since then, so that was 19 years ago, we've given scholarships to a total of 22 students for a total of $23,000, just from the small class back in 1964."

Now, they're ramping up their efforts. A classmate who died last year left $15,000 in his will, specifically for the scholarship fund, and they've placed future funding in the capable hands of the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.

The scholarship is available to graduating seniors at Pocomoke High, but it's not for the frontrunners in the academic race.

"Our scholarship is also a little unique in that you don't have to be going to a university or college, you can be going to a technical school. The other thing is, too, you don't have to be in the top 10% of the class. In fact, we look for those who are not in the top 10% of the class. We're looking more for the second-tier student who's not going to get a bunch of scholarships, looking to help them," says Sonny.

The deadline is April 1st.

Applications are available in the Pocomoke guidance office, or online at the Community Foundation's website, www.cfes.org.
