Two Girls Teens Volunteer to Serve Those Who Have Served Them

Posted: Updated:

Millsboro, DE.; Brittany Ritter and Karrsin Mitchell are doing their best to serve those who have served them. The ninth graders have spent the past three months building benches for the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in honor of their veteran relatives.

Brittany says, "even if its something that seems small, you never know how big of a difference it can make to someone else."

For the past two years, they've made fresh wreaths and planted flowers to honor the local vets. They raised over 500 dollars for their projects from donations from family and friends, and a yard sale. Brittany's pop-pop and two of Karssin's uncles have served in the military.

Cemetery officials say visitors are noticing their efforts. " They're great. I wish we had more people that would come out and do this," said cemetery administrator Gregory Bee.

These benches will give those mourning, a little extra comfort.

"We saw the courtyard where families come to grieve after a funeral, after their loved ones have been buried, and there was really nowhere for them to sit, and think, and to cherish the memories they had with their loved ones," Karrsin tells.

Karrsin says, these projects make her feel really great. The girls hope that others their age will be inspired to volunteer too.

"Maybe we can inspire other people as our junior national honors society inspired us. It just takes a little spark to get an idea in someone else's head, " Brittany said.

Cemetery officials say that they have been facing some financial issues in the recent years, and this contribution from the girls saved them money they didn't necessarily have.
