Ways To Save On Your Monthly Smartphone Bill

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 News - Monthly cell phone bills can really put a dent in your wallet. But there are ways to save without dropping your smartphone.

"It's ridiculously high. It's like highway robbery," Trina Sisco of Salisbury, Md. said.

But there's good news. You can lower your rates, thanks to new rate plan wars.

AT&T just lowered single smartphone rates from $80 to $65 a month for voice, text and two gigs of data. Verizon cut its Edge plan from $90 to $80 a month. T-Mobile has a simple choice plan with one gig of data for $50 a month. Sprint's newest family plan allows you to add another member for as low as $25 a month, including data.

So there are options to save, but your carrier won't just offer it to you -- you have to ask.

"They're expensive, but if you turn around and call your carrier, they'll turn around and hook you up!" William Messick of Salisbury Md. said.

Messick was paying over $300 a month for five phones. But a simple phone call cut that by nearly half.

"They turned around and put me on a plan - it was $175 a month for five phones," he said.

If that's still over your budget, save $10 a month and drop texting entirely, then use apps like "What's App" to send texts for free.

Or you can consider a prepaid phone like Walmart's Straight Talk. Check out websites like SaveonPhone.com to compare prices.

"It's a whole lot cheaper for me," Sisco said.

"It's a flat rate. It's one price and you have as many minutes as you want, as many texting minutes, you have unlimited internet access and it's pretty reasonable," Karla Kramer of Salisbury, Md. said.

But for some, those sky high prices, may be well worth it.

"We've kept it for so long because in our area, Verizon has the best coverage," Lorie Tull said.
