Alice Parsons Davis Memorial Scholarship

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. – When beloved Parkside High School teacher Alice Davis passed away three years ago, her surviving colleagues decided to honor her memory by offering scholarships, and they've been doing it every year since.

"She was very well-respected, and so this was a way that we could, remember her. She was kind-hearted, and I'd say just a 'teacher that you would want to have,' as a student," says Susan Huff, who taught with Mrs. Davis, and continues to teach at Parkside.

This year, they're offering a $1,000 scholarship in honor of Mrs. Davis. The first scholarship, three years ago, was sourced entirely by teachers who worked with her.

"Right after her passing that year really, teachers got together and provided the first funding, I think we had maybe $500 at that time," says Mrs. Huff.

The school has since partnered with the Community Foundation of the Eastern shore, to keep the funding going.

Applicants must be graduating seniors at Parkside High School, with at least a 4.0 weighted GPA. Mrs. Huff says Mrs. Davis was interested in History, Journalism, and English, so the applicant should be as well.

An in-class essay is also required, which Mrs. Huff says is "mainly a type of philosophical essay, personal experience and encounters, the essay prompt changes every year…they are unaware of what the prompt will be."

The deadline to apply is April 1st.

Students can find applications either in the Parkside guidance office, or on the Community Foundation's website, www.cfes.org.
