Posted: Updated:

SMYRNA, Del. - A14-year-old Smyrna high school student is in custody, accused of phoning in twounspecified bomb threats at the Smyrna School District's office Tuesdaymorning.

Police say they traced thecalls back to his cell phone.

"The first call came in,we were on high alert. When the second call came in, we decided to evacuate,"Superintendent of Schools Deborah Wicks said.

The first call reportedly came in at approximately 7:52 a.m. advising that there was a bomb in one of the schools. The second call came in around 8:40 a.m. advising that the bomb was going to go off at a specified time, however the secretary receiving the call was not able to understand what the time was. Around 9:00 a.m., parentswere notified, buses were called back, and approximately 5,000 students weresent home for the day.

"The principal came on themicrophone and told us that there was an emergency and we need to evacuate -- likesomebody's going to start a bomb that's threatening us," 6th graderat John Bassett Moore Intermediate School Elisabeth Edwards said.

"Kind of worried -- likeshocked, scared," 8th grader at Smyrna Middle School Allison Embertsaid.

Police say it took 13 bombsniffing dogs from the Delaware State Police, Capital Police, Delaware State FireMarshal's Office and the Dover Air Force Base about 2.5 hours to clear alleight schools in the district, as well as Providence Creek Academy in Clayton, which was evacuated due to its close proximity.

"It was a hoax, wesearched the schools and came up with nothing," Acting Police Chief of theSmyrna Police Department Norman Wood said.

But what may seem like apractical joke to a teenager, is nothing to take lightly.

"It's just one of thosethings with the times that we're living in now, we can't take that chance,"Wood said.

The juvenile wasapprehended at approximately 3:00 p.m. at his residence without incident. TheSmyrna Police Department charged him with seven counts of TerroristicThreatening by making a false statement to case the evacuation of a building, for the two phone calls he made. He was also charged with three counts ofTerroristic Threatening by making a false statement to cause the evacuation ofa building by the Clayton Police Department. He was transported to Justice ofPeace Court #7 where he was presented and released to his mother pending alater court appearance.

There is no immediatethreat to any of the schools or the community, so weather permitting, studentswill come back to school Wednesday morning and carry on as usual.
