UPDATE: Victims Identified In Delmar Fire, Cause Still Unknown

Posted: Updated:

DELMAR, Md. - The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office is currently investigating a fatal fire in Delmar.

Officials say the blaze happened at a mobile home on Niblett Court. The Delmar Fire Department reportedly responded around 2:30 PM.  The Maryland State Fire Marshal says David W. Cullen, 65, and Laura Cullen, 61, the only apparent occupants of the home, were both found dead. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will reportedly determine the cause of deaths for the victims.

Officials say damage loss estimates for the structure and contents is valued at $40,000. They say they have determined the fire started in the living room, but are still investigating the cause. A smoke alarm was located but has reportedly not yet been determined if it was operating at the time of the fire. However, they do feel hoarding may have been a contributing factor.

"We do have some material that was blocking the windows and exits that may have prevented them from escaping," says Brian Geraci, the Maryland State Fire Marshal. "It's one of the initiatives we've taken on in the Fire Marshal's office this year, the hoarding issues throughout the state."

Geraci says since September, the office has seen four fatal fires where hoarding was a contributing factor. The office reportedly estimates that there are 20,000 cases of hoarding across Maryland, and they are working with state health officials to try to address the issue in all counties to prevent future deaths.
