DELAWARE CITY, Del. - Delaware State Police say they are investigating a single vehicle crash that injured a Newark man and closed a Delaware City intersection.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 1:22 AM as Samuel S. Avila-Lopez was operating a 2006 Kia Sedona southbound on River Road (SR9) approaching Wrangle Hill Road (SR72). The Sedona reportedly attempted to turn left onto SR72, but due to speed, was unable to make the turn and slid into a telephone pole on the south side of the intersection breaking the pole in half.
Police say Samuel S. Avila-Lopez, who was properly restrained, was reportedly removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Christiana Medical Center where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say he was cited for Careless Driving, Driving Without a Valid License, and No Proof of Insurance.
DelDOT reportedly posted detours on their website alerting motorist of the road closure while electrical crews worked to repair the downed wires and pole. You can find updates by clicking on the Live Traffic link and then Real-Time Advisories for New Castle County.
