SALISBURY, Md. - In this edition of Meet The Money Givers, we'll learn about what one local organization is doing to help educate the very people who will one day teach our young ones themselves. WMDT's David Caldwell has the details.

Every year the Eastern Shore Reading Council offers a scholarship to help the future educators of America in honor of Wicomico County's Barbara S. Davis. "She was the consummate reading teacher. She was a mentor of mine and of many. She loved children and she loved teaching children and she loved children's books, she had such a collection of children's books in her room, and they were all signed by the authors and she just love to read." says Jane Long, of the  Eastern Shore Reading Council.

The $1,000 scholarships are open to seniors in Somerset, Worcester, and Wicomico Counties who have been accepted at an accredited college in the field of education. whether it's elementary, high school, it could be art, could be phys ed, it could be science, it could be any area.

The reading council is giving out two this year, based on a combination of need and merit. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA, and the essay portion of the application is especially important.

Long goes on to say "We like to see in their essay the types of activities that they have done with children if they've worked in daycares if they've worked in a school, hear the voice of the student in the essay as far as their passion for children and for teaching."

The deadline is May 1st. David Caldwell WMDT 47 News.
