Drone Testing And Research On The Way To Crisfield Airport

Posted: Updated:

CRISFIELD, Md. - Drone research and testing could soon be on the way to Crisfield Airport.

According to officials with the UAS Test Site at the University of Maryland, the state is one of six sites across the country selected by the Federal Aviation Administration to test the drones, also known as Unmanned Aircraft Systems, through flight and ground tests.

Officials say the Crisfield Airport's close proximity to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, which is also helping with the research, along with Wallops Flight Facility and the Naval Air Station Patuxent River, makes it an attractive location.

"There will be public notification so that folks are aware of what we're doing, how we're doing it, who we're doing it with, the people that are involved things like that," says Matt Scassero, director of the UAS Test Site at UMD. "We're excited to use Crisfield."

Scassero says they want to use the test site not only to assist the FAA, but other state and local agencies, and move towards discovering how to use the drones commercially.
